As part of our artificial intelligence and intellectual property roadmap, Questel has been investigating, assessing, and testing AI capabilities for many years. We apply supervised and unsupervised machine learning (ML), natural language processing (NLP), genetic algorithms (GA), and neural networks (among other AI technologies) to drive innovation for clients in three key areas: to supercharge IP data, to unlock insights, and to analyze outcomes.
CEO, Questel
"The significance of AI in our field necessitates an internalized approach which partnerships simply cannot offer. In addition to immediately impacting patent drafting and searching, AI will directly benefit several of our other products such as Equinox, our highly successful IPMS solution.”
Patent Product Strategy Director, Questel
“Intellectual property is a sweet spot for artificial intelligence, with real efficiency gains to be achieved, including by reducing the risk of data errors. Given the high stakes associated with failing to pay renewals on time or drafting a patent too hastily and narrowly, we can see the potential benefits of AI-elevated tools.”
Director of Global Production Platform, Questel
"From optimizing machine translation (MT) output to automatic post-editing and concordance search, we have the potential to streamline and automate translations through smart application of AI technologies. AI could correct raw MT output before sending results to a human reviewer, run quality checks, facilitate access to translation memories, and even offer real-time editing suggestions to linguists as they translate.”
Project Manager BioSciences, Questel
“Our ambition is not only to create exciting new features based on current AI technology but also to look well beyond that at future possibilities, including larger projects that can encompass entire patent families and even complete datasets. Imagine conversing with our software, asking for trends, summarizing complete datasets, classifying with excerpts, and reasoning. This is just the beginning for artificial intelligence and intellectual property at Questel."
Co-founder, qatent
“qatent has always positioned IP practitioners at the heart of its strategy, with the aim of augmenting them through machine capabilities.”
CTO, qatent
“The unparalleled richness and structure of the Questel global patent, trademark, and design databases is an incredible learning ground for AI-algorithms and will quickly give more depth to our calculations.”
The Augmented IP Practitioner
We believe we can deliver tangible benefits for IP professionals by harnessing the potential of AI and automation to increase efficiency, improve data quality, and lower risk. Artificial intelligence and intellectual property are ideal partners, with AI technologies offering us the ability to support IP owners to analyze and compare patents, trademarks, and copyrighted works and assist in the evaluation of IP infringement, prior art searches, and prosecution cases.
Through Generative AI and other AI techniques, we can help IP teams deal with the complexity and repetitive tasks involved in docketing IP assets, safeguarding trade secrets, and ensuring compliance with copyright laws for AI-generated content.
As a tech leader in the IP industry, Questel is committed to providing the best of AI to all IP practitioners. Discover our plans for artificial intelligence and intellectual property and join us on this journey by exploring our solutions below.
Patent search & analysis
We use AI technology to boost semantic search, similarity search, automatic classification and to verify patent data in our IP Intelligence Software. By simply entering paragraphs of English text, users can retrieve and analyze relevant patent documents across the entire patent database, including patent information, invention disclosures, scientific abstracts/paragraphs, and technical descriptions. As data quality is the foundation of all forms of analysis, our AI methodologies also use deep learning to clean up assignee information, including highlighting name errors, aggregating patent families, and proposing corrections ready for human verification.
Shortly, we will launch our AI Assistant (a large language model (LLM)-based patent claims comparison system) to provide users with rapid access to patent insights and information, such as patent summaries, claims summaries, and publication comparisons. What makes this new tool particularly exciting is how quickly technology has evolved as we have developed it.
Trademark search and watch
Our best-in-class similarity technology, powered by Predictive AI, allows users to search words and images in the description and detach the source image for ease of review.
Questel already uses Predictive AI in our world-class Clearance & Watch Platform, but there is more to come. AI tools could automate and enhance the brand creation proposal by proposing unique logos and product designs (Generative AI), support monitoring (AI Search Assistants), and automate monitoring to identify infringements and manage workflows for potential conflicts.
IP portfolio management
IPMS is at the heart of Questel's end-to-end integrated IP strategy.
Double docketing, manual review, time-consuming data entry, and the high volumes of paperwork and emails that IP professionals receive daily lead to an increased risk of data-processing errors. We are investigating the use of AI to automate data verification, audits, reporting, and beyond.
Online brand protection
Our combined online brand protection monitoring and tracking solution reduces the demands on brand owners by automatically detecting online threats according to pre-defined criteria and triggering pre-agreed automated alerts and notifications. All activity is coordinated via a centralized online case management system so that take-downs can be initiated rapidly or managed in bulk.
Tech-enabled translation
From machine translation (MT) to post-editing and quality checks, we streamline and automate translations through the smart application of AI translation technologies. Our AI-boosted translation and editing tools provide a first or final check on translations for expert review, identifying grammatical errors, leveraging knowledge from similar translations that have been completed previously, and offering real-time editing suggestions to linguists as they translate.
We are harnessing the potential of AI technologies to not only streamline and automate translations but also to put our clients in greater control of the entire end-to-end process. Through Predictive AI, we can enable clients to analyze quality, price, availability, and capacity to determine the best choice of vendor or linguists for a specific project or task.
Patent drafting
qatent applies leading-edge natural language generation and machine learning to help IP professionals draft quality patents quicker using AI. The intuitive interface combines knowledge from patent and intellectual property attorneys with Large Language Models (LLMs) to produce high-quality text proposals and/or validate text to reduce the number of objections during patent prosecution.
Cost management
Drawing on our artificial intelligence and intellectual property technology, our invoice management module assigns and groups invoices to a patent lifecycle phase to reduce the time required for human review.
Patent preparation and prosecution
Our AI-boosted 'one-click' workflow technology standardizes the preparation and prosecution process for patent owners, using simple chat interactions to instantly analyze complex documents, automatically collect data insights, and promote strategic stakeholder collaboration. With no set-up or internal resources required, you can start to realize the efficiency benefits of this easy-to-use software interface immediately.
AI-Classifier in Action
With the number of patent documents increasing rapidly, organizations must find a more effective way to search, analyze, and classify relevant data. Based on machine-learning algorithms, AI-Classifier enables users to quickly search patent documents, distinguish between relevant and non-relevant patent documents, and identify all relevant patent-specific data for rapid prior art searching.
"AI-Classifier can be beneficial to replace manual time-consuming checks and classification exercises. For example, we use AI-Classifier for patent landscapes drawing on thousands of documents and also state-of-the-art studies featuring hundreds of documents [...] If you have many patent documents to analyze but limited resources, the tool can be very helpful because you can use the AI to quickly prioritize which patents should be examined first, and which are potentially out of scope."
